Mental health matters at Moseley School

Open Door launches new onsite counselling service for students of Moseley School

We are delighted to have started work in Moseley School and Sixth Form this term, supporting pupils with their mental health. Moseley school is a mixed secondary school and sixth form in Birmingham with over 1,300 pupils. Our trained counsellor will be working on site one day per week, able to provide one to one counselling to any child who needs it.

Open Door Chief Executive, Carmel Mullan Hartley says:

"It's fantastic to be working in partnership with Moseley School - expanding the reach of our counselling services in schools across Birmingham and having a really direct impact on young people's lives. Being a teenager can be hard, having access to on site face to face support from a trained mental health professional who can listen without judgement is so important. Moseley School have a really positive approach to mental health and wellbeing support for their pupils so we are delighted to be supporting their good work and working as part of such a great team."

Mental health problems are thought to affect around three children in every class, and providing early support is vital, helping to reduce the long term impact. Promoting positive mental health in schools also has a range of other benefits, improving behaviour and relationships, attitudes to learning, and attendance rates.

Moseley School aim to provide a whole school system that promotes positive mental health. Their website says:

"Every Moseley student deserves a safe, caring and healthy environment that helps them to learn, grow and thrive. We know that students are better prepared for success when they have positive, healthy relationships along with appropriate supports, resources and tools. We want to create a school environment that supports student’s well-being and positive mental health.

"Students need to be seen, heard, valued and supported, so students know their school is actively committed to helping them develop resilience to supporting their brightest future."
