About bereavement counselling

Our specialist bereavement and grief counselling at Open Door is available to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one.

You will be able to talk to a professional and caring counsellor about the person who has died and how their death is affecting you or how you feel you are coping.

“You will never get over the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to be."
Elizabeth Kubler Ross and David Kessler

What does grieving look like?

There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief impacts everyone differently — it can manifest in different ways, on different timescales, and unpredictably. All and any responses to loss are natural.

Grief can impact your:

  • Thoughts: It is natural for your thinking to be affected, whether this appears to be obsessing over the details of their death or regrets and ‘what ifs’.

  • Feelings: Many experience intense mood swings, increased anxiety or sudden overwhelming moments of anger; others feel numb and disorientated.

  • Behaviours: You may find yourself withdrawing from others around you, struggling to concentrate or relax, or acting more impulsively.

  • Physical health: Aches and nausea are common reactions to grief, as are changes to your sleep schedule or appetite.

You may question if your responses, emotional or physical, are normal. It can really help to share your feelings and talk things through with a compassionate counsellor.

Some people attend grief counselling soon after experiencing bereavement whilst others access it even years later. It is never too late to receive grief counselling.

How can grief counselling help?

The counsellor will help you to understand your emotion and reduce any distress you have around what your feelings are. At Open Door we use person-centred counselling which is non-judgmental and non-directive. Instead of instructing you or telling you the ‘answer’, we listen and provide gentle support.
