Couples counselling
At Open Door we offer couples counselling to any two people who define themselves as being in a relationship with each other.
We aim to help couples consider and explore the difficult aspects of their relationship, improving communication by creating honesty and openness.
Why do couples decide to come for counselling together?
Some couples attend counselling when they are experiencing a crisis, whilst others access it when they are facing a particular issue, despite having stability in the relationship
Here are some things counselling can help with:
Significant life events, for example marriage, a bereavement, or becoming parents
Difficulties communicating arising in conflict and arguments
Mental health difficulties
Financial stress and worry, for example losing a job, or the impact of the cost of living crisis
Differences in parenting approaches, for example behaviour management and discipline styles
Issues related to trust and jealousy, including lack of intimacy or overdependence
Complete breakdown in the relationship resulting in considerations around whether the relationship should end.
How might couples counselling help?
Counselling offers a safe space in which you can explore what is causing you distress. It will help you to both look at your own experiences of relationships in the past, as this may be impacting upon how you are in this relationship.
It doesn’t seek to blame or judge, or hold either person responsible but instead helps you to focus on what needs to change, and how, including how you can better communicate with each other.
